Welcome to Whetstone Chocolates, a long-standing St. Augustine chocolate standby experience!
This factory store offers daily tasting tours and has been in business since 1967. It is considered to be 'St. Augustine's original chocolate tour' and is a commonplace experience for locals and guests alike.
Before we discuss the tour's details, here is a brief timeline of events in Whetstone's history:
- 1966 - Henry and Esther Whetstone open a small ice cream store. Moving from their home kitchen to an actual building downtown, this store can still be visited today as Tedi's Olde Tyme Ice Cream.
- 1984 - The Whetstone's move the business into a 10,000 square foot factory as demand grew, with big names such as Nestle's, Hershey, and M&M Mars becoming company wholesalers.
- Early 1990s - The chocolate factory and the tours it provides becomes a major tourist attraction and staple St. Augustine experience.
During the tour, you will learn more details of the companies history, the making of chocolates, and unknown details of the Whetstone family business. You will have a 4-tiered tasting experience that will enlighten you on the differences between dark, milk, and white chocolates. After you've walked through the factory you can stop at the store and take home such popular products as the Gator Bait, Chocolate Assortments, and popcorn!
