Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site
Between the years 1854-1859, Ulysses S. Grant lived at the St. Louis property of White Haven with his wife and family. Today your student group can visit the nine-acre White Haven property at the U.S. Grant National Historic Site, open daily. As a Union general in the Civil War and the 18th president of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant played a large role in American history. His involvement in the Civil War helped ensure the Union’s victory over the Confederate army.
White Haven is the location where Grant lived with his wife and both of their families for five years in the 19th century. Now, it is preserved as a national historic site that you can visit and learn about this historic president. Take a free tour of the Main House, watch a 22-minute introductory film at the Visitor Center entitled U.S. Grant: A Legacy of Freedom, or walk the historic trails and learn about the people who once lived and worked on the property.
Visit the interpretive museum located in the historic stables where you can see exhibits such as An Intricate Tapestry: The Lives of Ulysses and Julia Grant. Learn about the importance of Ulysses S. Grant in the span of American history and during the Civil War, and learn about life in 19th century America.
