South Florida Museum
The largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida’s Gulf Coast awaits your group with this Sarasota educational destination, the South Florida Museum. This three-in-one museum, planetarium, and aquarium will give your group the trifecta of learning adventures as you take in local, ecological, and historical facts about Sarasota and Florida in general.
The South Florida Museum has an extensive collection of artifacts that help interpret the region from Pleistocene times to the present. Fossil evidence sheds light on the earliest mammals and marine life from the area and archaeological artifacts show the way the earliest settlers lived in the area. Be sure to check out the new Environment Wing to learn more about the specific ecology of the local Pine Uplands and Riverine Galleries. The museum also discusses medical practices during the time of settlement, local maritime traditions, and the New World's contributions to the area such as a Spanish manor house replica, chapel, and full-scale memorial to Hernando DeSoto and his birthplace.
This trip also includes a visit to the Bishop Planetarium, which is considered to have one of the most advanced all-digital projection systems in the world, as well as the Parker Manatee Aquarium, home to the oldest living manatee in the world, Snooty!
