Portland Japanese Garden
Portland’s diverse landscape is truly impressive, and there is no better place to see this up close and personal than the Portland Japanese Garden. This 5.5-acre garden is actually made of five distinct garden styles, each representing a sense of peace, harmony, and tranquility desired in such a garden. Here your group can experience the feeling of being a part of nature as they stroll through the "living reflection of the long history and traditional culture of Japan, influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies." These such philosophies always present something more in their composition of stone, water, and plants than originally meets the eye, as you will see once within the garden walls.
Inside you will see that stone composition is one of the most important elements in the garden, the entire acreage covered in such structures as pagodas, stone lanterns, arbors, and bridges. Every piece of design is asymmetrical in its basic foundation and reflects nature in its idealized form, as you will hear all about if you take a guided tour or listen to a lecture by Professor Takuma Tono. Learn all about how native Oregon trees were used to help the garden blend in naturally with the environment, as intended in the Japanese culture.
Tours are seasonal and last an hour, with options for private tours, groups, and field trips to personalize your visit. After a tour, explore on your own your favorite garden, including the Flat, Strolling Pond, Tea, Natural, and Sand and Stone gardens. Your group really won’t want to miss out on this beautiful and culturally enriching experience!
