Portland Art Museum

Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum was established in 1892, making it the oldest art museum on the West Coast and the seventh oldest art museum in the United States. This museum is internationally recognized for its impressive permanent collection and ambitious special exhibitions. These special collections are drawn from museum holdings and the world’s finest public and private collections. Here there are over 42,000 objects displayed in 112,000 square feet of galleries, each section containing the history of art from ancient times to today. There are on average over 350,000 visitors that make this trek annually, each eager to see the amazing collection of art and art information.

Once here your group will have the chance to self-tour or opt for a docent-led tour, each option full of opportunity to see the most popular and talked about collections, such as the impressive collection regarding native peoples of North America, the English Silver collection, or the graphic arts collection. As you will learn this museum is an active collecting Institute, 90% of its entire museum space dedicated to its permanent collection. Within this collection, you will see such exhibits as Seeing Nature, Fotofolio, and Thlatwa Thlatwa - Indigenous Currents. While here be sure to check out all the other landmark buildings on campus, such as the Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, Gilkey Center for Graphic Arts, or Northwest Film Center, each part of the reason this center is a cornerstone of culture. This premier venue for education in visual arts also offers your group a fun Museum Shop on your way out, chock-full of eclectic gifts and books you may want to grab before you go!
