The first settlers cultivated the arid valley and before long, the city took off as a mining center and initiated the first transcontinental railroad, becoming known as the Crossroads of the West. With a significant outdoor recreation industry, Salt Lake City takes advantage of its lovely surroundings. The city even hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002 and continues to be one of the most coveted skiing destinations in the country.
