In 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was founded as the “State Normal College for Colored Students,” its first classes consisting of just fifteen students with two instructors. Today, FAMU, as it is affectionately known, is the premier institution among historically black colleges and universities.
Distinguished by lush foliage and massive oaks, FAMU's main campus comprises 156 buildings spread over 422 acres atop the highest of state capital Tallahassee’s seven hills. The University currently enrolls nearly 11,000 students from the United States and more than 70 countries such as India, Egypt, Trinidad, the Netherlands, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Brazil. Top undergraduate programs are architecture, journalism, computer information sciences, and psychology.
FAMU’s top graduate programs include pharmaceutical sciences along with public health, physical therapy, engineering, physics, masters of applied social sciences, business and sociology. FAMU tours are conducted by highly knowledgeable Campus Ambassadors who will point out places of interest and enlighten prospective students and their families around the University’s academic programs and traditions while providing insightful information about the student experience at FAMU. Visitors will be treated to a first-hand look at a day in Campus life, observing students studying in the Quad, chatting on the “Set,” or grabbing lunch at the Orange Room.
