Old Jail
One of the many 'historic must-sees' in St. Augustine is the Old Jail, otherwise known as the St. Johns County Jail.
The Old Jail Museum offers exhibits and educational tours of old cells and enlightens guests on what life was like for prisoners in this facility. This jail served as the home to local prisoners for over 60 years, being in operation for 1891 to 1953. At the time of construction Henry Flagler did not want to deter and 'fat cat' investors from the city of St. Augustine so he disguised the jail as a hotel! Buiding it in the classic Romanesque Revival style and painting it in an unassuming color, this prison facility was actually quite a pleasant, non-threatening site to see!
During your visit, costumed actors will tell tales of the old jail and its occupants such as mean ole Sheriff Joe. They may even book you as an inmate yourself. See the large onsite collection of weapons and artifacts and take part in any historical reenactments or interactive experiences happening during your visit. There are 30 minute tours that depart every 20 minutes as well!
