Museum of Geology
The Museum of Geology sits in the middle of a regional treasure trove of fossils. To the east and south are the Eocene and Oligocene mammals of the White River Formation....All of this excellent fossil preservation is combined to form our displays, which span the history of life on Earth, all reflected in the rocks. - Museum of Geology
The Museum of Geology is a free museum located at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, in Rapid City. More specifically, it is located on the 3rd floor of O'Harra Hall within the school campus.
Inside you will find an exploration of the natural history of the earth through scientific inquiry. The museum aims to preserve specimens and data, and is a 'dedicated repository for scientific research'. While here your group will see various exhibits containing things such as rare fossils from the White River Badlands, mounted skeletons from mammals and dinosaurs, and mineral displays including meteorites, crystals, and gems. The exhibits focus on paleontology, the study of ancient life, and mineralogy, the study of minerals.
If you have any young ones in your group visit the Kid's Zone, full of hands-on activities and exhibits. There are guided tours for groups, as well as special events like Night at the Museum and summer field camps. Before you go be sure to visit the gift shop and pick up your own educational books, rocks to study, or toys/souvenirs.
For more in-depth information during your visit be sure to head to the James E Martin Paleontological Research Lab, or MPRL, as well, where the official research and collections are stored.
