Medical University of South Carolina
Welcome to the Medical University of South Carolina, or MUSC for short. This university visit opportunity is perfect for prospective medical students, high school seniors touring college campuses, or any students visiting Charleston for an educational tour.
MUSC was first established in 1824. Dedicated to education, research, and patient care, this university serves as the state's only academic health science center, as well as the largest nonfederal employer in Charleston. Here are some quick stats about the school:
- 3,000 students
- 600 residents
- 6 colleges
- 13,000 employees
- 1,500 faculty members
It is easy to see why this school makes such a big impact on the community, both education and employment wise. During your visit your group can tour the campus and get more in-depth information on the area they may be interested in, the schools including nursing, dental, health professions, medical, pharmacy, and graduate studies.
*MUSC is also highly known for its excellence in diversity and inclusion today, though perhaps not so much in 1969 when many members of the hospital and school put together a union strike. Over 60 employees from the hospital joined in for what is considered to be the Charleston Hospital Workers Movement (this is a good addition to Black History tours in Charleston).
