Single-day trips are the best way to let your students explore a city, learn new information, and have a memorable field trip experience away from the classroom without all the stress of planning an overnight adventure and raising sufficient funds to do so.
Giving your students the same amount of time they would have during a school day (typically 8 hours) will, on average, allow for 2 hours of travel time to and from your location and then a solid 6 hours exploring and learning. Use your time to explore a National or State Park, Nationally-Acclaimed Museum, or local History or Art District. Park visits for picnic lunches and playtime are often good choices to break up the day, as well!
