USS Midway Museum
In the historic San Diego Embarcadero, the USS Midway Museum reigns as the number one attraction for military and maritime history in southern California. Commissioned a week after the end of WWII, the USS Midway was the world's largest ship in the world until 1955 (it's even bigger than the Titanic!), too big to traverse the Panama Canal. The aircraft carrier remains one of the longest-serving ships in the Navy, serving 47 years, seeing combat in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. In 1992, the ship was decommissioned and was revamped into a museum where it now stands in San Diego.
Spend the day exploring over 60 exhibits spread throughout the historic ship. Walk in the footsteps of more than 250,000 crewmen who served aboard the ship, seeing their quarters, where they worked, and learn what they did on board. See the collection of more than 29 restored aircraft, keeping this ship up to its status as an aircraft carrier. Let yourselves be guided through the ship on an audio tour narrated by Midway sailors and even participate in one of two flight simulators. Most people set aside three to four hours to spend onboard the Midway and you'll need it to see everything from the sleeping quarters and galley to the ship jail, post office, machine shops, engine room, and more. Even explore the flight control and the bridge, situated in the high island over the flight deck. Family-friendly, educational activities take place year-round and are sure to wow everyone in your group.
